Corp is a concept book about art, philosophy and photography, which aims to speak with individuals who are interested in a feminist approach to these topics. The concept explores the way feminine bodies intersect with their social surroundings. It would highlight feminist artists who comment on these intersections and challenge convention. My design focuses on this interplay and pushes inquisitive readers towards an aesthetic that is both intriguing and disturbing. Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Figma were all used in the making of this project.
For this printed book, I chose bold colours and a striking image of international artist and social commentator John Yuyi. The high value red in the background is reminiscent of blood, directly contrasting the cyborg imagery presented in the foreground. It is also eye catching and daring, something I wanted to bring forward given the subject matter as well as the intensity in the artists eyes. I chose to texturize the red cover, as I wanted to show what it might look like if it were printed with a cloth material. The book should be tactile and feel sturdy. Corp, meaning body in French, is written in Oddity-Script font to show fluidity in the human body.
I created two spreads to present an idea of what the book might contain. It features art by Niki de Saint Phalle and the copy comes from an article by Daily Art Magazine by Caroline Galambosova. I used high resolution images and removed their backgrounds to feature Saint Phalle’s art. I wanted these spreads to be primarily about the sculptures, while having a legible but slightly different layout.
I wanted to show how the book might be presented on web and mobile platforms and therefore created a simple website design as seen in these PC and mobile mockups. I kept it simple and maintained the primary colours of the book on the website. They are bold and enticing. I kept the Corp logo at the centre of the banner to ensure it is clear and visible. I wrote a brief description about the concept and created a call-to-action button for easy ordering access.
This project was fun and interesting. It pushed me to really create an interesting concept that I could envision on the shelves of a thought-provoking bookstore. It was difficult to photoshop the internal computer parts into the model’s body. I would probably continue to work further on that portion; though I feel like for its purpose at this point it works well. I also might develop the web and mobile designs; they are very simple and do the job, but I think other features could be added later on. This project was enjoyable and really allowed me to push my creativity and vision.
